Depression can be very harmful for personal health-mental and physical. Rather if you are in depression, it means that your mental state is ill. Constant weeping, nervousness, too much lethargy or lying in bed throughout the day are some of the various very obvious symptoms of depression. Sometimes the depression goes to such an extent that it causes blindness in many people if not treated at the early stage.
Many times it is just not possible to detect depression in people. Depression can also lead to suicidal tendencies which sometimes prove fatal. The first step for treating depression is counseling although mild drugs like sleeping pills which can cause drowsiness are also recommended at the initial stages. But these drugs are always mild as they are extremely addictive and prolonged intake can cause addiction in the patient. Counseling nowadays also involves cognitive behavioral therapy.
Depression is mental problem and such problems or conditions are needed to be handled with great finesse and care. A psychotherapist is the perfect person who can analyze the proper reasons and causes for depression in an individual by studying his behavior and important incidents in his past life. Failure in career, love or losing someone close and near, physical abnormality due to accident, illness or any other problems can cause depression in a person. Many times these traits have been found to be genetically inclined as well.
Counseling starts showing effect after some time and hence should be carried out very regularly and without break up. Since the main stress of counseling is to keep the patient independent of drugs, it can never cause any side effects. The general way of counseling is being a listener and motivating without being judgmental. After listening to the whole incidences and the emotions of the patient the counselor then gives his own views and motivates the patient to come out of his shell and act more positively. Counseling is very effective when some one is also suffering form inferiority complex. But there are times when this therapy does not work. It is usually when the past experiences are very traumatic and severe. But it can certainly help the patient understand that he is not alone in this situation and there are more like him. This in itself gives lot of courage to the patient.
The symptoms of depression differs from person to person and the common ones are constant tiredness, lack of motivation, too much irritation, energy loss, difficulty in sleeping, guilt feeling, low self esteem, suicidal tendency and many more. Post partum depression is found in women who have given birth to child. Most of the times, there is no single reason for depression. Rather different incidences form a chain to slowly cause depression. According to recent studies, depression is not only a disease of mind, it also affects brain. The brain of depressed person is in the state of chemical imbalance and due to this the transmission of signals in the nervous system also are disrupted owing to which the depressed patient is not stable in his thought and tend to be over sensitive or over reactive at times.
Although overcoming depression is not easy, it still can be done with regular counseling sessions and medication under guidance. But the most important thing is that the treatment should be carried out regularly without break.
