India, which many countries assume it to be the back office destination of the world has to the delight of the world, a young working population who is not bothered of working in the night shifts. The dirty little secret is that the young rather wouldn’t mind working at such odd hours to earn a decent salary inspite of the strain this puts on one’s health.

People who work in night shifts should realize the effect that it has on their health. Risk ranges from sleep disorders, digestive issues, mood swings, loss of productivity and even heart failure. The notion that people who have night shifts are able to manage the required amount of sleep during the day time is a myth. More often than not, the day sleep is interrupted with noise, light, social commitments, etc which leads to inadequate sleep.

So what can you do?

Try not taking a profession which involves night shifts. If it is not possible for you then here are some of the things that you can do during night shifts which might help you to some extent

a) Limit intake of Caffeine during night shifts. It has been observed that we tend to go to that extra mug of coffee during night time to stay awake than other times

 b) Try to be as close to the bright light as possible during night shift

 c) Go for a walk once in a while which will keep you active

 d) Doing mundane tasks all the time only increases the desire for a sleep. Keep your brain active by doing tasks which involve active participation from the brain

 e) Increase the intake of fruits to ensure vitamins are provided to the body
